Although New York City is made up of five boroughs, the one most people immediately think of when conjuring up the city is Manhattan, home of most of the famous landmarks and other tourist hotspots. Just over the river, however, lies the borough of Brooklyn, a vibrant city in its own right and the most populous of the five boroughs. Enriched with cultural and ethnic diversity, this borough is rapidly developing and coming to rival Manhattan for commerce and tourism. If you are considering a trip to the city and looking for hotels Brooklyn New York will be able to oblige.
Getting to and from Brooklyn from other parts of the city is easy, thanks to heavy service in the borough by the subways and buses of the Metropolitan Transit Authority. Atlantic Avenue, the busiest subway station in "BK", is served by nine different subway lines and is only about fifteen minutes from downtown Manhattan by train. Add in the three bridges and tunnel connecting the two boroughs and you can see why, when considering hotels Brooklyn New York is a good option.
You do not have to go into Manhattan to enjoy your vacation, however. Brooklyn has plenty to see and do without having to leave the borough. The Brooklyn Museum is known the world over for its collections and exhibits and offers free admission on the first Friday of every month, complete with live performances from musicians and authors.
Not to be outdone on the shopping front, you will see counterparts to famous New York department stores right here in BK, including Macy's and Barney's. Shopping in the boutiques along Park Slope's Fifth Avenue or in Fort Greene is also fun and provides a taste of the local culture and flavor.
If the weather is being kind, a trip to Coney Island can be a great time. Coney Island is home to AstroLand and Luna Park theme parks, both full of fun rides and attractions, as well as the historic Cyclone roller coaster. Visit the beach, take a walk along the boardwalk and enjoy the carnival atmosphere at Coney, which also annually hosts the Mermaid Festival and the Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. You can even catch a ball game if the mood strikes, as the Minor League, Brooklyn Cyclones play just off the end of the boardwalk at MCU Park.
The Cyclones are the only professional team that plays in Brooklyn since the Dodgers left for Los Angeles after the 1957 baseball season. However, this will be changing soon with the construction of the Barclays Center, a new basketball arena which when completed, will house the NBA team currently known as the New Jersey Nets. The new stadium will be in the neighborhood of Prospect Heights, right next to the Atlantic Avenue subway station.
There are some great budget-friendly vacation options in "the Borough of Churches" as well. There are several parks including the expansive Prospect Park, the second largest in New York City, after Central Park in Manhattan. A walk across the Brooklyn Bridge won't cost you a dime and it's a wonderful way to see some terrific views of the city, including the Empire State Building and the Statue of Liberty in the distance. The Brooklyn Brewery in Williamsburg offers free tours and samples every weekend.
Speaking of Williamsburg, if you are hungry from all the fun you have been having in BK, the Peter Luger Steak House is a great choice for dinner. This historic restaurant has been doing business in Williamsburg for over 120 years and has been named the best steak house in New York City by Zagat for more than twenty-five consecutive years and counting. From museums and boardwalks to restaurants and hotels Brooklyn New York has virtually everything you could look for in a vacation.
The vacation options in Brooklyn are as limitless as the busy excitement throughout the city of New York. A trip to New York is fun and by staying in Brooklyn you can get the best of both worlds by experiencing more than one of the city's diverse boroughs. Brooklyn is easy to get to by taxi or public transportation after landing in any of the three major airports serving New York City.
